“Klasse Klassik 2018” – Educational-Project with school choirs

Within the common project of Bavarian Radio Chorus and Münchner Rundfunkorchester selected Bavarian school orchestras and school choirs made music side by side with the professionals.

This unique ensemble of students and professional musicians dedicated itself to a selection of great, powerful dances which challenge not just the orchestra but also the choir.

Musicians and singers can share their knowledge on-site in multiple rehearsal periods which belong to the educational concept of “Klasse Klassik”.

Young choir conductors

While singers and orchestra conductors are given many opportunities to develop their artistic profiles at competitions and master classes after their formal education, there are far fewer advanced training options for choirmasters. The choir conductor’s forum organized by the Bayerischer Rundfunk fills this gap and has already taken place three times.

During a week-long workshop, young choirmasters rehearse works with the Bavarian Radio Chorus and are given the chance to hone their artistic as well as technical skills to the finest in dialogue with the chorus members and their artistic director.

Young singers and conductors

The Bavarian Radio Chorus is especially committed to supporting young and aspiring talent at the onset of their careers, when their skills are still unknown to the world. In that vein, winners of the ARD-Musikwettbewerb including Ilse Erens and Günter Papendell were invited to perform with the Bavarian Radio Chorus in concert after the competition.

Munich mezzo-soprano Ulrike Malotta was involved in the performance of Bach’s Johannes-Passion (St. John Passion) with the BR-Chor. Maximilian Schmitt debuted as the Evangelist in the Matthäus Passion by Bach. Recordings of concerts have been released on CD.

Choirmasters like the Lithuanian Mirga Grazinyte-Tyla, the former Regensburger Domspatz Florian Helgath or Yuval Weinberg from Israel were able to distinguish themselves as guest conductors of the choir early in their careers.

Commissioning young composers

Regularly, the Bavarian Radio Chorus reaches out to young composers and commissions new choral works. Among them is the Latvia-born Eriks Esenvalds, whose composition Vineta not only contributed to the concert programme of the same name, but also appeared in the concert movie Vineta – versunkene Stadt by the Bavarian Radio Chorus.

In collaboration with the “Freundeskreis des Chores”, one commission in season 2015/2016 was given to the Munich composer Gregor Mayrhofer, who created a counterpoint to the programme “Romantische Serenade”.

Collaboration with the Bayerischer Landesjugendchor

In the past, the promotion of young talent by the Bavarian Radio Chorus also extended to the Bayerischer Landesjugendchor (BLJC; Bavarian Youth Choir) in the shape of joint concerts that were preceded by intensive rehearsal periods with the young singers. Nominated by the BR, the BLJC was able to participate in an established competition for amateur choirs in Europe, which takes place every two years under the auspices of the European Broadcasting Union.
