No Christmas composition overwhelms listeners with a greater range of expression and forms than Bach’s Christmas Oratorio. It recounts and reflects on the biblical story, expresses joy and inspires listeners to ponder and anticipate the festive season.
Here the Basel Chamber Orchestra celebrates its début with the BR Choir. Committed to historically informed performance practice, it is specially devoted to the music of the Baroque and Viennese Classical periods and to composers of our time. The Basel Chamber Orchestra views itself as an ensemble of musical individualists and dispenses with the post of music director, preferring to have a principal guest conductor. Here, together with solo vocalists and the BR Choir, it is expertly guided through the choruses, chorales and arias of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio by Howard Arman.
