That’s why Lera Auerbach, in her 72 “incantatory preludes” for chorus and saxophone quartet, wishes to “emphasise things that unite us”. In 72 Angels this Soviet-born composer, who emigrated to the United States in 1991, refers to angels as “spiritual guides, higher energies or messengers”.
There are 72 names for angels in the esoteric doctrine of the Kabbalah, including angels of love and wisdom. Each celestial being embodies a virtue or order. Mehabel; for instance, stands for wisdom and freedom. Peter Dijkstra, the former artistic director of the BR Chorus, gave this multi-layered work its première in Amsterdam in 2016. Now he will present it with the BR Chorus in Prince Regent’s Theatre, Munich.
