Franui, from the tiny village of Innervillgraten in eastern Tyrol, is known for its idiosyncratic blend of woodwind, brass and string instruments. It has made a name for itself through wilful “transmogrifications” of dances, funeral marches and songs by such romantic composers as Schubert, Brahms, Schumann and, above all, Mahler. These ten east Tyrolean musicians think of Mahler as their neighbour; after all, viewed from Innervillgraten, his composing cabin in Toblach lies just over the hill.
