Igor Kuljerić (1938-2006) has been a key figure within Croatian music for decades. He conducted orchestras and choirs, and founded cultural institutions, festivals and concert series. As a composer, Kuljerić was influenced by the Italian avant-garde centred on Luigi Nono, and composed works in many genres, including symphonic works, film music and chamber music. Later, he focused on regional traditions in folk music and sacred music, as reflected in his Croatian Glagolitic Requiem.
In his Requiem Kuljerić builds on the medieval tradition which allowed the Slavic population of Dalmatia and Istria to celebrate the Catholic rites in their own language. The work was completed in 1996 and combines the formal structure of the Roman Catholic Requiem with the traditions of Glagolitic chant in the coastal regions between Pazin and Kotor. Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) composed Abîme des oiseaux in 1941 while a prisoner of war in Toul, France before he was deported to the Görlitz POW camp.
